**Chapter 1: Cold Ink, Hot Ash**
"Name?" The Notary's voice cut through the chamber like a knife.
"Elara Nightshade." Nyx let irony twist her lips. The Church's games demanded theatrics.
"Amnesty transaction." The Notary shuffled papers without looking up. "Sign here."
Nyx's pen hovered over the documents. Stone walls pressed close, heavy with old secrets.
A figure stepped forward. Clean as a saint's hymn.
Asa Vale.
Nyx's ancient flames—dead for centuries—flickered under her skin. Heat she hadn't felt in lifetimes sparked at his proximity.
"Our liaison," the Notary droned. "He'll oversee your compliance."
Asa met her gaze. Eyes like a quiet storm. "Nyx."
She kept her voice smooth despite the fire licking her ribs. "What's the catch?"
"No catch." His lips barely moved. "Just devotion."
"Sounds like a trap."
The Notary pushed forward the sheaf of papers. "Standard clauses. Compliance. Curfew. Voluntary confession interviews."
"Interviews?" Nyx's pen stilled.
"Asa will conduct them."
She scrawled her signature, face impassive, pulse hammering. Her body was betraying her. Centuries of cold ash, and now *this*.
"Looks like I'm all yours." She slid the papers back, sarcasm sharp enough to cut.
Asa's gaze tracked her like he was memorizing. "I'm here to ensure your safety."
"Safety or surveillance?"
"Both."
The Notary mentioned devotion protocols. Asa's hand tremored—barely, briefly.
Nyx filed that away. "Does the Church always send someone so... committed?"
He inclined his head. "I volunteered."
"Aren't you a ray of sunshine."
The Notary's stamp echoed with finality. "You're now under the Church's protection."
Nyx turned to leave.
Church guards flanked her immediately.
"Unnecessary." Her voice went sharp.
One guard smirked. "Orders."
Asa stepped between them. Quiet command radiated from him like heat from a banked fire. "I'll handle it."
The guards hesitated. Stepped back.
Nyx raised an eyebrow. "You think you can handle me?"
His eyes held hers. Deeper than she'd expected. Darker. "You're not as unmanageable as you think."
Her pulse stuttered. She covered it with defiance. "I'm not owned by anyone."
Asa's reply came soft. It cut through her bravado like a blade through silk.
"Then don't sign things that bind you."
Nyx stared at him. Anger and something worse churned in her chest—curiosity, maybe. Recognition.
She was unbound. Untamed.
Or so she'd thought.
Asa watched her with that memorizing gaze. A silent promise lived in it: everything she believed was about to burn.
This was just the beginning.
